Ses
Fontanelles a Wetland which we have to protect
 The
wetland area of Ses Fontanelles is situated between Can Pastilla and
S’Arenal, directly at the coast of the town of Palma (Mallorca). It is
the largest wetland area in the bay of Palma and has about 32,5
hectares. Ses Fontanelles is the rest of the “Es Prat Wetland”,
which was destroyed at the beginning of the nineteenth century. During
the last decades the wetland was also abused to deposit construction
material of houses.
The ecological importance of Ses Fontanelles is remarkable. There are
many different birds in this area despite of the nearby city of Palma.
In the wetland area Ses Fontanelles you will find only here the wild
living plant “Limonium barceloi“. Generally spoken, Ses Fontanelles
has a European ecologic importance like other wetland areas in the
Mediterranean.
The wetland areas are very important for the birds, which fly from
Northern Europe to Africa and back from Africa to Northern Europe. There
for it is very important to conserve the wetland area Ses Fontanelles.
The government of Mallorca want to destroy Ses Fontanelles, because they
are planning to build a shopping- and leisure center there. A new street
and the leisure center will destroy Ses Fontanelles, if we don´t stop
it.
Because of
this GOB begs your help!
We want that the government of Mallorca stops their plans to destroy Ses
Fontanelles. GOB also wants a renaturation of the wetland.

Please send a message to l’Ajuntament de Palma, El Govern de les Illes
Balears and to the Ministerio de Medio Ambiente. These institutions are
able to stop the destruction of Ses Fontanelles.
