The "Serra de Tramuntana" debated (27/2/2000)

On Monday, February 28 at 8 p.m., there will be a debate at the Club Diario de Mallorca, in Palma, called "Tramuntana, Natural Park". The participation of Mateu Castelló is foreseen to represent the Govern Balear, Martí Solivelles from the Pollença Farming Cooperative, Miquel Àngel March of the GOB, Fernando Dameto of the Balearic Agricultural and Breeding Federation (FARB), Bartomeu Cànoves as the representative of the owners of Mondragó and Margalida Llobrera of the Associació per la Defensa de la Serra de Tramuntana. The event will be a good opportunity to explain what a natural park is and is not, and to debate the convenience or not of declaring the Serra de Tramuntana a Natural Park.

Over twenty years ago people talked about the possibility of declaring the Serra de Tramuntana a Natural Park. Now this declaration seems possible. It forms part of the commitments acquired by the Progress Pact and therefore there is political will by the Balearic Government to carry out this project which has a lot of social support but also has its opponents. Several meetings of owners have been held and they have expressed their complete opposition to the declaration, and this Tuesday, at the Club de Pollença, another meeting will be held against the Park.

Motivated by the importance of this topic for the future of the Mallorcan society, MallorcaWeb has opened a new debate dedicated to the Serra de Tramuntana where one can vote YES or NO to the Park, make an opinion in this respect, and find related information.
