GOB and Matas: the environmental
impact of the desalinisation plants (13/6/2000)
The GOB thinks
that the proposal by the Spanish minister, Jaume Matas, to build
a total of six desalinisation plants in the Balearics to resolve
the problem of lack of water, is, from an economic and environmental
point of view, a real disaster, since they would result shortly
in the need to build a new power station, in view of the high
power consumption needed to run the plants.
Therefore, the ecological group thinks that the priority in relation to water in the Balearics is to invest in other essential directions, such as a change in the hydraulic policy, with a view to administering the actual resources better and at the same time to promote water savings, the reuse of treated sewage water and the paralisation of urban growth.
