The Red Kite, a bird on the point of extinction in Mallorca (7/7/2000)

The renovated web of the Mallorca section of the GOB incorporates, amongst other novelties, a special dedicated to the Red Kite (Milvus milvus) on Mallorca where they report on a study and protection project for this magnificent bird that is in danger of extinction on the island.

Throughout last spring the GOB has continued working on the study and protection project for the Red Kite on Mallorca. This campaign started last year as they suspected that the Mallorcan numbers of the red kite were seriously threatened. The results of the 99 campaign were terrible: only 4 to 6 pairs of the red kite are left on the island. The previous census carried out in 1993, counted between 20 and 27 pairs existing. The results for this year are equally worrying: only 6 pairs have been localised, of which only three have managed to breed.
