The Semarnat has decided
to revoke the permit given by the extinct Semarnap to the mega tourist development
promoted by the hotel chain Sol Meliá together with four other firms
on the Mexican beaches of Xcacel-Xcacelito, in Quintana Roo. According to the
Semarnat, a new public consultation will be organised to finally define the
future of the project.
According to Greenpeace México, with this decision they have ended an
odyssey of illegalities that started at the end of 1997 with the sale of Xcacel-Xcacelito
violating the Agreement of Ecological Planning of the Cancún-Tulúm
Corridor that recommended that the area of Xcaceli had to be protected and in
the event of being sold priority would be given to the NGOs to buy the property
and to convert it into an ecological reserve.
The beaches of Xcacel and Xcacelito, hardly 2.5 kms long, are the nesting place for marine green turtles and cahuama, species in danger of extinction.
