12,000 water birds hibernate in s'Albufera (23/1/2002)

The Ministry of Environment of the Balearic Government counted on January 15, 2002 the water birds that spend the winter in the Parc Natural de s'Albufera. The total of the account is 11.935 water birds from 49 different species, which is a record, only surpassed by the 13.000 birds accounted in 1997. The high number of birds hibernating this year is due, in part, to the cold winter that has affected the north and centre of Europe.
The Natural Park s'Albufera of Mallorca, with a protected area of 1.708,75 Ha, is situated facing the bay of Alcudia, in the municipalities of Muro and Sa Pobla. The wetland of s'Alfubera is a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA), and is one of the most important ecosystems in the Balearics and Pitiüses. The birds, the eels, the water, the bridges, the canals and the vegetation of the rushes, together with the beach and dunes, form a very special natural area for nature lovers.

The access to the park is by foot or bicycle via the Pont dels Anglesos and the entry is free, but permission must be obtained from the Park Reception Centre.
