Imminent danger for the only european population of the Robust Orchid (Orchis robusta)

The Balearic Government continues to suspend protection of the zone and meanwhile a proposal for a golf course there is reaching a critical stage

Help us!

The Robust Orchid, Orchis robusta, is a threatened species which has its only European colony at the Albufera de Mallorca. The total population in 2007 was some 1300 individuals, of which 400 were within the Natural Park and a further 900 just outside, in the area of Son Bosc (Muro municipality). The species is only known from two other localities in the World - one in Algeria and one in Morocco.

Because of its high biodiversity, the area of Son Bosc was incorporated into S’Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park in 2003. However, a few months later Jaume Matas (PP) used the powers of the Autonomous Community to suspend protection of Son Bosc and reverse the protection process. More than three years later the protection status of Son Bosc remains paralysed.

Meanwhile, a promoter group has launched a project to build a golf course in this zone and have just applied to Muro Council for a licence to proceed. The realisation of this project which at this very moment is being presented to the Muro Council threatens the very survival of two thirds of the European population of this threatened species.

The new government formed after the recent elections, presided over by Francesc Antich (PSOE) and with Miquel Angel Grimalt (UM) as head of the Environment Conselleria (Ministry), has shown no interest in lifting the freeze on the area and re-establishing its protected status, incorporating Son Bosc permanently within the Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park.

In view of the situation, we request your help. Please send a message to the President of the Government of the Balearic Islands and to the Environment Conseller (Minister) asking them to protect the area of Son Bosc permanently. To do this please enter your personal details and click the button marked “send”.

Thanks for your help!
